Why Michigan is a Great Vacation Spot

If you just purchased one of the Detroit houses for sale and are hoping to enjoy a vacation without traveling too far, you’re in luck. Michigan may often be equated with the automobile industry, but it offers a ton for locals and visitors alike, making it a great place to escape to for many reasons, including these.

Mackinac Island

Looking as if it’s from the pages of a storybook, Mackinac Island offers lots of charms, as a virtually vehicle-free destination where people get around by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. About eight miles long, it sits between the upper and lower peninsulas and offers a variety of activities indoors and out, including hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. Events like art shows and concerts are frequent, and visitors can stay at the iconic Grand Hotel. Open since 1887, it boasts the world’s longest front porch, all-inclusive packages, children’s programs, and a 220-foot swimming pool.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Another one of the top destinations for a vacation in Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sits along the western shores of Lake Michigan covering a 35-mile stretch in the Lower Peninsula. It was once named by Good Morning America as the “Most Beautiful Place in America,” offering tall, gorgeous sand dunes, some of which are more than 450 feet high, towering over the lake. From the top, you’ll get a jaw-dropping view. Run up and then roll down the sand mountains, enjoy a refreshing dip on a hot day in the cool water at Esch Road Beach as well as tubing and kayaking on the Platte River.

Pictured Rocks National Seashore

Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape or a family vacation, the stunning Pictured Rocks National Seashore is ideal. Enjoy strolling the moss-covered paths and listening to the thundering sounds of cascading falls as well as taking part in active pursuits like swimming, kayaking, fishing and mountain biking. There are countless waterfalls in the area and multiple lighthouses to visit too.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is made up of Lake Superior’s largest island, Isle Royale, and around 450 smaller surrounding islands. There are no permanent residences and it’s only open from April through October, accessed by seaplane or ferry, but once you’re here you’ll be able to immerse yourself in nature, enjoying activities like fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, and camping while watching for a diverse array of abundant wildlife, including moose.

Experience the Netherlands

In the town of Holland, you might feel as if you’re really in the Netherlands without having to catch a flight or pull out your passport. Its Dutch heritage has been well-preserved, providing an authentic Dutch experience throughout downtown, with all sorts of Dutch delicacies found in local eateries and shops. The Holland Museum showcases the history of Holland and a Dutch art collection, there’s a windmill to tour and a dutch village where you can learn how to Klompen dance. In the spring, millions of tulips will be blooming throughout the city.
